Total Hip Replacement Q & A

What is total hip replacement?

During total hip replacement, Dr. Moore surgically replaces your hip joint with sturdy, long-lasting artificial parts to relieve chronic or debilitating pain. During the procedure, he might replace part or all of the joint with ceramic, hard plastic, and metal parts if conservative hip pain treatments haven’t worked.

Why might I need a total hip replacement?

You might be a good candidate for a total hip replacement if you experience severe or long-lasting pain that interferes with your ability to complete everyday tasks or stay active. Hip pain can result from:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Fractures
  • Hip diseases

Dr. Moore might first recommend conservative treatments for hip pain, such as anti-inflammatory medications, steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, regenerative medicine, or physical therapy.

Am I a good candidate for the procedure?

To find out if total hip replacement is the right procedure for you, Dr. Moore discusses your medical history and reviews your symptoms. He completes a physical exam and uses blood tests, MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, or other imaging procedures to diagnose your disease or injury.

To prepare for total hip replacement surgery, follow all of Dr. Moore’s pre-surgery instructions. Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery, don’t smoke, and stop taking certain medications. Avoid dental work two weeks before your surgery. Don’t eat or drink anything the morning of surgery.

What happens during total hip replacement?

When you arrive for total hip replacement, you change into a hospital gown. You’re given general anesthesia to put you to sleep so you don’t feel any pain. Dr. Moore offers an anterior approach, accessing your hip joint from the front by separating muscles instead of cutting them as with traditional total hip replacements. This approach offers the same benefits of traditional hip surgery but with faster recovery and return to work, and less pain.

He uses a special table, called a Hana® table, and robotic-assisted technology to ensure better precision and accuracy when implanting your new prosthetic hip. After the procedure, he closes the incision site. Your surgery might last several hours.

What should I expect after surgery?

After a total hip replacement, you relax in a recovery area while the anesthesia wears off. You may be able to head home the same day or stay a night or two in the hospital. Have a friend or family member drive you home and stay with you for a night or two.

Follow all post-surgical instructions and attend physical therapy sessions to optimize your results. You can use a walker or crutches while you heal.

You might resume most normal activities after about 6-12 weeks, with final results occurring 6-12 months after total hip replacement.

Don’t live with chronic hip pain or reduced mobility when a total hip replacement can restore your quality of life and full range of motion. Schedule an appointment with Nate Moore, DO, over the phone or online to find out if the procedure is right for you.
